Visitors

Here at Dwight there are numerous visitors that come into our classrooms throughout the day. They range from parents, administrators, doctors, tour guides, future parents of Dwight students, and people from around the world who are interested in the school. It's great that so many people are interested in coming to see what Dwight is all about but it makes it difficult for the students to stay on track. At one point in my classroom we had three ladies from Iceland plus three teachers and a parent. Within five minutes we had two administrators and a doctor plus three teachers. As you can tell this is a lot of people in a small area and it tends to over stimulate the students. They don't mind having people poke their head in to see what is happening but when it is for almost all day observing it makes it challenging. The majority of the students aren't extremely familiar with all the people in the classroom. It would take a while to get used to before they are comfortable. This was similar to when I had arrived in the classroom. The students wondered how long am I really going to be here, who is this person teaching us? Within the week the students had become comfortable with my presence so I can't imagine having constant interruptions of others. Compared to other schools I have been in the door is usually closed and it is always startling when you hear a knock on the door to signify a visitor. It makes it hard here then because it also puts a small interruption in you lesson to greet them.

Overall we are loving our experiences here in New York and our sad it is slowly coming to an end.
