Happy Halloween!

Today was a little crazy at school! More like a lot of craziness! Here in New York the students are allowed to dress up all day at school. This makes for an interesting day. You have to worry about all the accessories that go along with it as well as the questions of when is the party and when is the parade. This afternoon from 1-3 the students celebrated by having a parade. We walked through the halls and out onto the street and into Central Park. Literally they stopped traffic for us that is how big of a deal it is. The parents lined the streets with their iphones to take pictures and make sure their children had all the final touches of their costumes. It was so great to see how involved the parents are at the school. Even when we were out at the parade some parent volunteers were helping set up the classroom for the party. I could not believe how great the classroom looked and all because of the parent involvement. At other schools I have been to it is never this much. Usually you get the handful of dedicated moms and dads but not here. The parents got off of work to come see the kids. It makes me think about this as a question to ask during an interview about parent involvement.

The rest of the day we worked on writing more poems. Today it was time to work on their Halloween poems. It was a perfect day to do so. The students used spooky sayings and I couldn't believe how detailed they were. One of my favorites was Halloween sounds like the ghosts pumping blood from the zombies juicy brains. This is first grade remind you. We will be focusing on poetry for awhile considering this is the unit of inquiry at the time.

Also after school we experienced our first faculty meeting. It was really nice to be apart of and see how things tick. To start it out we had a chance to talk with our grade levels and work on what the plan is for common assessment. It was interesting to hear the perspectives from the other first grade teachers because they don't always do the same thing. We also worked with all the specialist areas to see how we can relate our units of inquiry to something in P.E. , music, art, foreign languages, library and technology time. This should be done wherever you go but that isn't always the case. Here at Dwight this is always apart of the system. It made so much sense when they were going through what they have planned and everyone was sharing their opinions. We even had a chance to talk with the grade above us and for some of the others the grade below them. We talked about what things we really need to stress to the students in first grade that will make things easier in second grade. Luckily it wasn't a lot because the second grade teachers said they were already doing a good job.

So far it has been a great day back at the school and I am hoping the kids will be settled down by tomorrow and are off the sugar high.

Tonight we are going to a Halloween parade that supposedly is the thing to do here. Thousands of people attend and where costumes too. It should be a fun night.

Off to New Jersey!

Today we thought we would try to go out on our own to New Jersey. We did pretty well with the help of a couple New Yorkers to tell us the way. We did end of taking the Path Train to New Jersey. We wonder how they an build a system under water. That will be something we may research for later. Let us know if you have ideas. The goal of the day was to find Carlos Bakery, in Hoboken, from the TV show Cake Boss. We all enjoy watching this and thought it was a good idea to visit. You should take a look at the show sometime. It makes you hungry. This is one thing NJ is known for plus who woudn't enjoy a pastry. We were so glad once we arrived and were only hoping it was close within walking distance. Megan pulled out her handy iphone to look and sure enough it's only two minutes in walking distance! This made our day.
In my hometown we have a "Where in the World" contest. You bring the Faribault Daily News along to places you have been while you are reading the paper.

After we got our delicious pastries we decided to get a bite to eat at a little pizza joint. Here is where we heard those New Jersey accents we had been searching for. Very entertaining!

Notice how Megan's pizza is as big as her face!

While we were walking the streets to get from shop to shop we were practicing our saying of Hoboken. This is a challenge for anyone from Minnesota. We often like to put a lot of stress on the second "o". Maybe we will have it down by the time we leave.

We made our way down to the water walkway. Here we saw the most gorgeous site of New York. We could look out and see the Empire State Building, World Trade Center being built, and so many others. We were down there at a perfect timing with the sun setting as well. Here are some photos.

Tomorrow we are back to school to finally have a real first day on our own with the kids and other teachers. We will be up nice and early at 5am. Remind you that is 4am in Minnesota.

Till then, Heidi

We're still wet and now we're freezing, but we're sure having fun!

Today was another SPECTACULAR day in the Big Apple.  After sleeping in past 5:00 (we rolled out of bed around 9:00) we ate breakfast and hit the city by 11:00.  When we left the hotel it was drizzling rain, but the forecasted snow was on it's way.  Our plan of attack for the day was to head into Brooklyn to find Target (in order to pick up necessities) and check out the rest of the island.  Because we've never been to Brooklyn before, we used an app on my phone to navigate our way. Once we arrived at the subway station, we realized that the way we had planned to take is closed due to construction.  Whoops!  We got on the subway anyways and figured, we can do this, we're Gusties!

As we're riding the subway (in the wrong direction, mind you) Sarah ran into one of her students.  After a brief chit-chat, he asked us where we were going.  When we told him we were trying to find our way to Brooklyn, he gave us directions.  Keep in mind that he is a fourth grader and he has memorized the entire subway system of New York!  Even his dad admitted that he hasn't done that yet!  We were extremely grateful for this student because he got us to Brooklyn without any confusion.  What we realized on our way is that we spent close to an hour on a subway ride that should have been ten-fifteen minutes tops; we're working on it :)

When we got out of the subway station in Brooklyn, it was snowing!!! Winter weather may stop New Yorkers and tourists, but it will NOT stop three Minnesotan girls on a mission!  The snow doesn't stick quite here in NY like it does in Minnesota, so there was lots of slush and mess everywhere.  Of course we all had boots on, but nobody thought to bring mittens or a hat on our adventure... We know moms, we weren't the smartest.  We're just hoping that nobody gets pneumonia out of this ordeal!  The funniest part was that EVERYONE was using their umbrellas as a shield against the snow, as if it might protect them.  If I would have stopped to count the number of broken umbrellas randomly strewn on the ground I would have run out of fingers AND toes. It was a smidge ridiculous!

In Brooklyn, we ate some delicious BWW's and meandered around the Target store.  We really began to appreciate our Target stores back in Minnesota because this one looked like it had been ransacked by a thousand people; there were items on the floor, nothing was stocked, lines made it feel like Black Friday!  Thankfully we found what we needed and we were out the door.  Despite our earlier decision to tour Brooklyn, we thought it would be best to head back to Manhattan and check out the "Accent Capital of New York" another day when the sun was shining.  Because the girls were in the mood for "Star Searching", we traveled up to SoHo, Chinatown, and Little Italy to browse through the stores and find those more famous than us.

After realizing our pocket books were too small for SoHo, we quickly directed ourselves to Chinatown.  Here, Heidi got a steal of a purse, Sarah bought earrings, a watch, and a headwrap, and I found some gorgeous scarves.

On our way back to the ferry, we were stopped by a gentleman and asked for directions!  Do we look like New Yorkers already? Why thank you sir!  The best part is that Heidi whips around and yells, "Megan, where's your phone?"  Thank you iPhone for giving us directions 50+ times a day, you really save our lives!  We are looking at it less and less frequently as we navigate the city, acclimating to the subway system and how to "change trains."  I know I can't wait to show my mom my "city-slicker" ways and I'm sure the girls feel the same!  (As I write this, I realize it COMPLETELY negates my story of our subway trip to Brooklyn... I guess it's a situational feeling?)

Another wonderful, albeit chilly, day has passed successfully.  Tomorrow is another full day to adventure the town.  We'll be sure to update you on our journey!

-Megan

PS: There are NO Dairy Queens in New York.  For those of you who know me, this is a big dilemma, HUGE! Thankfully, Heidi found a Ben and Jerry's fridge in the hotel lobby.  The S'mores flavor is my new favorite, be sure to check it out!

Friday Fun :)

Hey Everyone! Happy Friday! We've been having a great time so far in New York! Today we were offically on our own, since Deb and Shelly headed back to MN. We were very sad to see them go, but also kind of excited to fully be on our own. Our commute went alot better today, and I think we are getting better and better at navigating the subway system, and coordinating that with the ferry schedule, walking distance, and the shuttle service as well. Today we didn't have school because of parent-teacher conferences. So instead we had a meeting scheduled with the school's chancellor and also a tour of the school as well. Before our meeting, we had some down time, so one of the things Heidi really wanted to do was go to the Today Show, it's one of her favorites! So we took the subway to Rockefeller Center, and stayed to watch some of the show. During the show we even were on TV! (Maybe some of you saw us :), I know my mom did and it was pretty cool!  We also got to shake Ann Curry's hand, and Heidi even got a picture with her!

she was grinning and so happy the rest of the day!

After the Today Show, we headed back towards the school, and since Central Park is right by our school we walked around a bit in there. It is such a pretty area and I know we will be heading back there again soon! After our meeting and tour, we headed to find lunch. One of the ladies at Dwight suggested a place called Saigon Grill (its a vitamese restraurant). It was delicious! We all had something different, here's a picture of what Megan had. The portion sizes were huge, so we ended up bringing up left overs (so glad there's a microwave in our room!).

After lunch, we headed to Times Square to walk around and check out some of the stores around there. We went to the M&M Store and it was so cool! They had M&M's in Gustie Colors!
After Times Square, we walked around the Financial District. It was really cool to walk through and see the buildings. Here are some pictures:

 New York Stock Exchange!

After walking through the financial district, we headed back to our hotel to relax a bit since we've had a busy week/ last couple days. We are very excited for this weekend (we hear there is snow coming but we dont want to believe it! haha) and I'm sure we will find more exciting/ interesting things to see, and fun things to do!

Thanks for Reading!

Wet student teachers

What a wet day it has been. Today it was raining from the time we left until the time we got back to our hotel. I completely understand why people go through so many umbrellas with that crazy wind. Overall though that couldn't stop our day.

Today was our first day at Dwight International School. I am in a first grade classroom while Megan is in third grade and Sarah is in fourth grade. The struggle though was just trying to get to the school. Today originally was going to be a trial day to see how long it would take to get to the school. Since we have to take the hotel shuttle, ferry, subway, and then walk there is a lot that needs to be accomplished and if one thing is late you are late for everything else. Of course this had to be with our hotel shuttle. It showed up late so we ended up catching the 7:00 ferry and the 7:30 subway which lasts half an hour. The problem is we needed to be at school by 7:30. By the time we actually got in we felt awful for being late. How can we be late on the first day? Good impression by the Gustavus gals!

We were soon husseled into our classrooms for the day to meet the kids and the teachers. Compared to schools in Minnesota and regular public schools it is different compared to Dwight. Here we have two co-teachers in a classroom at all times. Sometime they teach one subject and sometime they do a lesson together. I am really hoping we are able to jump in right away with assisting and even doing one or two lessons. This allows us to worry less about full time, finishing education department assignments, and seeing the sights and smells of New York.
                                                                My first grade classroom.

Some fun information about Dwight: Dwight was the first school in North America to offer the full International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. The students are also graded based on international benchmarks. This is the only universal curriculum in the world. The Primary Years Program (PYP) at the Dwight School will focus on develioing of the whole child as a student and a classmate. The point is to always be focused for student-centered approach with their strengths and interests. Also there is LOTS of inquiry based questions to be asked from the students. This is probably the one thing we are nervous about because we have never experienced such a thing. We will learn though!

Fun thing about the kids at school. For lunch and recess they go to Central Park. Central Park!

After school we went down to the World Trade Center Museum to take a look around at all the pictures and videos they had posted. It's so strange to see things here that make me remember seeing people rush down the streets with a dust of smoke following. Later on when my family is here we are all going to the Memorial to see the exact site. It will be a site to see!

Tomorrow we are on our own to get to the school. Deb and Shelly have to head back home. However, it is parent-teacher conferences so we will only be attending for half the day as we have meetings and tours set up for us. I'm really looking forward to meeting with Stephen Spahn, who is the chancellor of the school. I'm specifically excited to learn about the Korea teaching job openings next fall.

It will be another tiring day to come but we are getting used to early days already!

We walked the streets of New York... And survived!

Day one is complete!!!

Quick run down of one of the best days of our lives (as well as Deb's birthday!!!):

1 - The flight this morning was quick and easy. Baggage competition ended up to be - 1: Heidi 44 lbs 2: Sarah 53 lbs 3: Megan 57 lbs (yes, despite weighing my suitcase at home and literally cutting my clothing choices in half, I STILL went over by seven pounds... It was a near crisis.)  As we entered La Guardia, this poster was our welcoming committee (we were hoping for someone carrying a placard with our names on it but knew that was too good to be true!):

2 - We checked into our hotel on Staten Island. The decorations are magnificent (carousel horses all over!) :) After a brief getting ready period, it was off to the races.  The hotel provides a free shuttle for us to take to the Staten Island Ferry.  When we arrived at the ferry station, I experienced my first taste of what New Yorker attitudes are REALLY like.  We were trying to ensure that we were getting on the correct ferry so I decided to stop a gentleman who I presumed to be a security guard.  Upon calling out sir and tapping on his shoulder, I was immediately given the cold shoulder.  After he grudgingly answered my question, he walked away without looking me in the face. It was such a contrast to any interactions you would have with a stranger in Minnesota!  We were able to figure out which gate to use and jumped on the ferry.  Since Sarah and Heidi haven't been to New York, they were infatuated with the Statue of Liberty :)

3 - After we arrived in Manhattan, it was a hunt to get our Metro tickets for the subway.  After a bit of chaos trying to get unlimited tickets for us girls, we were on our way to Broadway.  We had to pick up our tickets before 5:30 and literally RAN through the streets to make it before they closed. I used to think my older brother walked quickly until I've walked with Deb and Heidi on a mission. After we finally retrieved our tickets (not without Shelly and I almost getting run over by taxi drivers first), it was time for some grub; we were STARVING! Deb suggested eating at Roxy's in Times Square which was fabulous.  Although we didn't see anyone famous there, we're determined to find someone yet!

4 - Finally, we were at our show, Jersey Boys. It was absolutely amazing!  At first I was hesitant about going because I didn't know the story line and thought I wouldn't know any of the songs. I was quickly corrected.  The plot is about the formation of the original group "Four Seasons" as well as "Franki Valli and the Four Seasons."  You may not think you know who they are, but check out this YouTube video, you'd be surprised!  Even us young girls knew the music and were jamming out and enjoying themselves!

Overall, it was a hectic day, but extremely enjoyable.  Now that we got our feet wet, it's just a matter of mastering the subway so we don't look like newbies and jumping into our classrooms tomorrow!  Heidi will share more about that later :) Thanks for following!

Packing and Getting Ready!

Wow! Its hard to believe that it is finally time to head to New York! It seems like just yesterday that we received news that we were going! I know I can speak for all of us when I say that we are all so excited for this next adventure! We are all so excited to share this adventure with you all as well! But before we can leave.... we have one very important task: Packing! Now I dont know about all of you, but I have not ever had to pack for a trip lasting 7 weeks! How in world do you pack for that? My first thought was please ship all contents of my closet to NY. Thanks. Haha.
 picture of my suitcase! :)
I will be honest and say that I was dreading packing for this because it just seemed so overwhelming! However, once I actually started it did get easier until I noticed how quickly my suitcase was filling up and I had not even put my shirts in yet. I then commented to my mom about how I thought the suitcase was alot bigger than it actually was and maybe its shrinking? She thought that was pretty funny.  I definitley had to make some decisions on will I really wear this? How many times will I wear this? Can I wear this teaching and on the  weekends? Thankfully I was able to kind of think about what I wore my first 7 weeks, and base it off of that.
Another thing I had to think about was A COAT! of course at some point it is going to start getting cold, so I will probably need a coat. Well I did not want to bring my big winter puffy winter coat that is essential for Minnesota Winters! So I had to get a little creative, and find a lighter weight coat, and somehow fit it in my suit case. We'll see if my suitcase weighs more than 50lbs tomorrow (I have a feeling it does).
Well I should probably head to bed, we have an early flight tomorow! and a busy day tomorrow!
Quick Plan of Tomorrow:
Fly to NY
Go to Hotel
Get Subway tickets etc.
Dinner
Broadway Show! Jersey Boys!
So excited!

Ready or Not... Here come the Gustavus Ladies New York!
