Crazy Weekend! Monday back to School!

This weekend flew by and lucky for us there is daylight savings in New York. It has been much appreciated for all of us. This morning the students got right to work as soon as they came into the classroom.

Every Monday they take their old homework and new homework (due Friday) and place it in their backpacks . They continued to work on their math and language daily. Following the students got to work on their word study. Since it is Monday the students aren't very familiar yet with their words. Often times they like to practice first on their own but since they were introduced to a new word study game they did that today. The students chose the pairs on their own. They worked extremely well and quiet together. The problem was the students wanted to have their partner spell the hard words like "truck" and "trick" and spell less focus on words such as "dad" and "mad". At this age they worry about themselves doing well then the partner even though everyone needs to spell the word correctly. Part of the morning meeting is reviewing math and language dailies as well as anything else bring covered. During this part the students were the best I have seen. They moved quickly to and from where they need to be. There was no talking and we didn't even have to sing our "eenie meenie" song. The students were able to get a gem in the bucket. Once the bucket gets full they are able to either have a sharing day or bring in a cuddly friend for the day. They need 100 gems to get the prize and we counted today. The students have a total of 91 gems. VERY CLOSE!

I am extremely jealous that my students in first grade have the opportunity to take Spanish or Chinese. I usually stay in the classroom for Spanish since I understand it and can assist. I love when they have Spanish because I am able to help out more. Plus it gives me a refresher on Spanish myself. I was asked by the Spanish teacher if I could help with the other first grade Spanish class later in the morning. The other class has nine students compared to my six students. This class was crazy! The teacher had to talk over the students to get any information across. They thought everything was funny as can be. I felt terrible for her but was glad to be able to assist with her what I could.

In writers workshop the students worked on a new type of poem. They were introduced to creating a diamond. This didn't work so well today because they did one word, two words, three words, and then fours words on each line to create the diamond. The students wanted to do more words to complete the phrase but couldn't because it needed to be the correct number of words. The nice thing was that there was what description needs to be on each line. It allowed the students who may have forgotten what to include to look back.

In the afternoon I took a reading group again. I love doing a reading lesson because there is so much I do with it. I worked on making predictions and words that rhythm in the book. The students were fairly close on the definition of prediction and were able to create their own to eventually refer back to at the end. I only had three students in the group instead of four because one students was absent today. This made it a little easier on myself and I was okay with that!

After school we had another Timothy House Meeting. Today we covered grade books for the main part. It was a little challenging to follow since it is nothing we have seen and they need to grade things different because of the units of inquiry. It went by quick already. I am excited for the rest of the week.

Tonight was my families last night in New York so we went to the 9/11 memorial! Wow! It is so pretty but yet sad to be at. There are thousands of names engraved into the side of the north and south pools. The night lights on the water made it mesmerizing. We were even able to see all the plans to come with museums and other buildings in the words. Who knows how long they will be working on rebuilding? This place is definitely something you want to check out and it is free to get into and the security is not bad at all. Make sure to walk around outside too to see the Fire House 10 Memorial that is made out of copper and has all the firefighters from that ladder house engraved. There is also a near by museum that shows a good story-line of the events.

Here are some pictures from the day as well as this weekend from my festivities with the family. They leave tomorrow but it was good having them out here to visit!
