A shopping cart on the subway say what?!

Hello Everyone! Happy Tuesday!
It was a beautiful sunny day in New York today. In my fourth grade class today, the students had the opportunity to go outside on the roof and play for 20 minutes. We all think it is so cool that the students get to go and play at Central Park some days, and play on the roof other days. This is very different for us since we are all used to the students going out to the playground. We all think it’s the coolest thing.

Today Heidi had the opportunity to teach a small group of students as part of a math lesson. This lesson focused on fact families. For those of you who don’t know what that is, I will give you an example. Lets say you have the problem 3+6=9. The fact families for this problem would be 6+3=9, 9-6=3, and 9-3=6. The key vocabulary for fact families is the words add in and sums. An example of an add in, in the problem above, an add in would be 3 or 6. A sum is the answer to the problem. Such as in 6+3, 9 would be the sum! Heidi told both of us over dinner tonight (which I will get to later) that teaching went very well, and she loved it. She also can’t wait for the next opportunity to teach a lesson.

In my class yesterday we began our new unit of inquiry on Government. Unit of inquiry is a general investigation into a specific topic like government or poetry, that is developed by student’s questions and misconceptions. Today we began researching on a couple different types of government. I enjoyed having the opportunity to work with the students, and talk with them about what they are learning. I was very impressed by the depth of previous knowledge the class has already.   I am very excited about this unit, and am looking forward to learning with the students, and teaching them as well.
Megan’s class is getting ready for their PYP presentations. PYP presentations is when the students present to parents and other school personnel about their unit of inquiry. Megan’s class spent time today working on their raps on about space. She said that it was fun to watch them practice, and continue to get better and better. She also said that this was a great way for them to showcase their learning.
Tonight after school, we decided to go over to the MET. To get there we walked through Central Park. We all enjoyed getting to see more of the park, and want to go back and walk around again soon.
Here are some pictures from the MET today (compliments of Megan):
our awesome souvenirs that we were pretty excited about :)

Cool Room that was set up at the MET

This was one of my favorites

Awesome Saxophone Player, playing outside of the MET. For one of his songs, he danced like Michael Jackson and played Beat It! It was great!

After the MET, we went in search for dinner. We ended up at a Thai restraurant called
WonDee Siam III. It was DELICIOUS!  We all definitley want to go back again. If you ever come to NYC you should for sure check out this place! The service was great, and the food was brought out right after it was made so it was piping hot!
Here are some pictures of Megan's food that we got:

After we ate we took the subway to get onto the Staten Island Ferry. I dont think we had ever been on the subway at this time (it was around 7:00), and the subway was PACKED! Everyone was squished inside like sardines! On one of the subways that we took to get to the Ferry, we got on a guy had a shopping cart on the subway! We were all very surprised, and wondered why in the world he would bring a shopping cart on the subway especially at this time. Oh the things you see in NYC, especially on the subway haha!

Today was another great day in NYC and we are looking forward to tomorrow, and the days to come! We hope you keep reading about our adventures and stories. Feel free to leave comments!

Adios!
-Sarah
