Tour Guides of NYC :)

Deb has arrived safe and sound!!! She will be here for a little over a week, so we look forward to having her joining us at Dwight to observe us and give us feedback on our teaching.

Today Heidi and I made a short, but sweet, journey over to Brooklyn to do a bit more shopping.  On the way, we took a pit stop (a new vocabulary word for many of my third graders) at the Staten Island Postcard Memorial.  As shown below, the two white arches that make up the memorial were designed to represent postcards that survivors may send up to the 274 Staten Islanders that passed away on September 11th.  As you peer directly through the two monuments, you can see the World Trade Center being built in the distance.  The memorial, built in 2004, includes small plaques with the names, birthdays, and occupations of those victims of the terrorist attacks that lived on the island.  To the right of each granite plaque is a silhouette shaped to portray the victim's profile.

After stopping at the memorial, we officially set out for the day.  Yesterday we had stopped at Beacon's Closet in Manhattan, but one of Heidi's CT's told us that the Beacon's Closet in Williamsburg (a section of Brooklyn) was MUCH larger.  Since we hadn't had enough shopping the day before, we set out in hopes of finding more great steals!  When we arrived, we found that the store was indeed two to three times bigger in Brooklyn than Manhattan.  Although Heidi and I both tried on a number of things, she walked out of the store with two tops and I walked out empty-handed; oh the life of a poor college kid :)  We do feel that we are getting the hang of travelling though, branching out into Brooklyn and further up into Manhattan. We have begun to move at a quicker pace which enables us to cover more ground and cross more site seeing off of our to-do lists.  We can happily report that we've given directions to 8 different people and feel like true "city-slickers."

We're back at the hotel now, finishing up lesson plans for this week.  This will be the first week where we all are teaching multiple lessons as we prepare for student teaching full time. It's crazy, but we only have one month left before we return home! We'll keep you updated about the teaching as our week begins!

Cheers from the city,
-Megan
